Diverticula and Diverticulitis

The diverticula are common after the age of 40 years.

Its incidence increases with increasing age.

Presentation in the author:

I had body aches and pains.

There was a low-grade fever.

There was shivering off and on.

When there is gas in the intestine that was causing pain unless passed away.

There was no vomiting or nausea.

The diagnosis was confirmed on the CT abdomen with contrast.


These signs and symptoms are vague and one can miss the diagnosis.

On the basis of low-grade fever, some may give him antibiotics and his symptoms will subside for time being.

The diagnosis can only be confirmed by the CT abdomen.

According to WHO 

The cardiovascular diseases are on decline. But deaths due to cancer are increasing. The caners are more common in high income countries.

Mortality is high due to non-communicable diseases in Russia, Ukraine and other Soviet states.

WHO found that 90% of the world population are living below the WHO air quality standards and this leads to death of millions of people. Air quality is very poor in Bulgaria, China and India. In these countries with average of 171 deaths per 100,000 population was due to air pollution in 2012.







Threat of new Virus Bird Flu (H7N9)

This Bird flu virus H7 N9 is already present in china.

This mostly cause infection to birds but recently it is seen in humans.

This virus is a killer. recently people infected by this virus 88% got pneumonia and 3/4 were sent to intensive care unit.

These patients has severe respiratory problems and 41% of these died.

In the human when this virus is present, then it may mutate and become more contagious.

In that case it can spread to other part of the world by air traffic.

CDC  ranks H7N9 virus as the flu strain with greatest potential to cause a pandemic  which may become global disease.

Bill Gate foundation funding to develop the vaccines against these deadly disease e.g. MERS.

The world pandemic  flu killed 50 million to 100 million people.

Changing weather also cause changes in the pattern of the infectious diseases. warmer climate expand the range of the disease  carrying animals and insects, like the aedes aegypti  mosquito that transmitted the Zika virus.

The Ebola virus outbreak  exploded in 2014 and killed 11,000 people. This virus still killing people because there is no vaccine or drugs.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Food to be Avoided

Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is now a days  very common problem.

GERD is increasing with the age. It is very common in the older people.

Following foods needs to be avoided.

  1. Avoid caffeine containing drinks like coffee and tea. Avoid even decaffeinated coffee.
  2. Avoid caffeinated soft drinks.
  3. Avoid citrus fruits and juices like grapefruit, and oranges.
  4. Avoid fruits like pineapple and tomato. 
  5. Stop tobacco in any form because the nicotine weakens the lower esophageal muscles.
  6. The following foods increase the symptoms of GERD like :
    1. Whole milk.
    2. Fatty foods.
    3. Chocolate.
    4. Most fast foods.
    5. Oily foods.
    6. Peppermint. 
    7. Soup containing the cream and the creamy foods.
  7. Avoid chewing gum and hard candy because these increase swallowing of air. This will increase belching and reflux.
  8. Avoid spicy or acidic foods may not be tolerated in some of the people.
  9. Avoid late hours eating and don't lie immediately on bed after the food.
  10. Raised the bed 6 to 8 inches to prevent the reflux. Can put extra pillows and this may be helpful.
  11. Eat frequent and small portions of the food.
  12. If you are overweight, try to lose weight.
  13. Following foods are recommended :
    1. Milk 1% and 2% or skimmed milk.
    2. Can use low fat or fat free yogurt.
    3. Vegetables are recommended.
    4. Bread with low fat contents are recommended.
    5. Fish, low fat meat and chicken.
    6. Fat free or low fat soups.
    7. Fruits like apple, watermelon, peaches, pears and banana.
  14. Following foods are bad for GERD:
    1. Fried items even vegetables.
    2. Whole milk 
    3. Chocolate milk.
    4. Fatty meat, bacon, sausages and chicken with lot of fats.
    5. Oranges, grapefruits and pine apple.
    6. Sweet dishes like chocolate and deserts with lot of oil or fats.
    7. Alcohol.
    8. Coffee, tea and mint tea.
    9. Carbonated beverages.
    10. Soups containing chicken, milk, beef, or cream.


Pain, ways to reduce chronic pain

The pain in the body and in the joints increases with increasing age.

This pain may be due to joints (Arthritis), and muscle aches.

How to reduce the chronic pain:

  1. The best option is exercise:
    1. When by exercise there is production of the Endorphins. 
    2. Endorphins improve the mode and block the pain signals.
    3. Exercise improve the muscle strength  which prevent further injury and pain.
  2. Smoking can increase the pain. So stop smoking.
  3. Meditation can help you to relax.
  4. Take deep breath which can make you relax.
  5. Stress can increase the pain, so find the ways to reduce the stress.
  6. Massage can:
    1. Relieve the chronic pain.
    2. Decrease the stress.
    3. It decreases the tension.
  7. Biofeedback methods can reduce migraine and tension headache.
